Greetings
cards, A bit of history
The
first examples of Greetings cards appeared in Germany around
the fifteen century, given at Christmas called, Andachtsbilder.
Henry Cole, the first director of London's Victoria and Albert
Museum has been credited the inventor of the modern day Greeting
card, |

The
story is along the lines that each year he would send a hand
written Christmas best wishes letter to all his family and
friends,
come 1843 being pressed for time he commissioned a member
of the Royal Academy to lithograph and hand colour one thousand
copies of a card (shown above), which was then sent to Cole's
relations, and friends.
At around the same time the Penny post was also introduced
making the sending of cards affordable and ever more popular,
right up until today where here, in UK five thousand cards
are bought every minute. |

| Now
you know where they came from, just where are they going,
now in the 21st century, will the Internet along with
e-cards and phone texting have any affect on every day
sales of cards?, according to results by sociological
study by Dr. Barry Wellman, professor of Sociology |

at the
University of Toronto, and Dr. Keith Hampton, professor of
Urban Studies and Planning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The answer is a resounding NO, the Internet is helping to
foster the use of traditional forms of communication by enabling
a whole new generation to expand its network of family and
friends it wishes to stay in touch with over time. This study
confirms that the increased use of the Internet and e-mail
will, in the long run, bolster the greeting card industry.
The Internet promotes communication, and of course communication
is what relationships are all about, an increased number of
relationships is naturally good news for the greeting card
market. |
